The dispute at La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno escalates after the announcement of 75 collective layoffs due to company restructuring. On Wednesday 1 November, the newspaper went on newsstands, despite the printing press strike, proclaimed from Tuesday 31 October to Saturday 4 November. It had never happened that the Apulian newspaper published without such a large part of its workers. The comment from the printers was harsh, as in the meeting held on Monday 30 October they had decided to abstain from work for 5 days "to counteract the collective dismissal procedure which almost 'cancels' almost the entire printing component".
“We have learned however - write on the website of the DY Leads newspaper Slc Cgil, Fistel Cisl, Uilcom Uil, Ugl Chimici Carta e Stampa, Rsu Edime Srl - of the publisher's decision to proceed with the printing of the newspaper scheduled for November 1st 2023 with the use of third-party companies, realizing a real replacement of the workforce of striking workers aimed at limiting the exercise of a constitutionally guaranteed right. What hurts most is that this violation occurs in a context that represents a bastion of democracy. These workers have already experienced difficult times and still live with salary restrictions due to a major intervention by social safety nets.
Up to now the parties have always put in place agreed management tools for redundancies and with the possibility of streamlining the workforce thanks also to the rules on early retirement voted in Parliament". “BAD CHOICE” In the opinion of the printing companies and the trade unions "The choice to escalate a confrontation before starting the process foreseen by the dismissal procedure initiated, also in conjunction with a convocation of the Sepac Committee of the Puglia Region, does a lot of harm and we will denounce this in all offices anti-union behaviour”.
