Shikara walked silently through the shadowed forest with Nara trotting by her side, her paws treading softly on the forest floor. The chilling breeze that blew through Shikara’s long silver hair reminded her that she should not to be this far into the darkness. This was wolf territory, no place for a half breed like her and Nara. But she was not going back; maybe it was the wolf in her that bared its fangs and gave her the stubborn determination, when the human side shrank into the corners of her mind and hid.
It started to get darker as they headed farther. So she stopped for a moment to let her eyes adjust. Fear started to creep through her calm demeanor but she had to keep going. She had to get Daken back, even if she died trying.
As she walked she reminisced of the last time she saw Daken. They had lain together at the edge of the forest staring at the stars and listing to the wolf’s mournful songs. Earlier that evening he had slipped a small but beautiful engagement ring on her finger. She hadn’t said a word yet, she had to conceder the consequences. She had laid her head on his broad chest while her troubled thoughts raced. When he saw the confusion and doubt in her pale blue eyes, he had asked.
“What’s wrong?”
When she didn’t reply he asked
“Is it your dad?”
“No,” she said softly, “do you ever think about the future,” she turned her head up to look at him, “what do you see?”
He laughed softly and replied back, “what do you mean?”
Shikara sighed, “we can’t stay together…it’s against all the rules.” Her voice was heavy.
He looked at her lovingly and slipped an arm around her shoulders, “Hang the rules,” he brushed his lips across her temple, “all I care about is you love,”
She hid her troubled gaze, “I have to go, it’s almost sunrise.” She muttered.
“Please stay,” Daken stroked her hair, “just this once, please?”
“I cant, they’ll find us” she looked towards the dark reds and oranges lightening the horizon.
Daken sighed, “Ok, I love you”
She ran, towards the village where she resided, he headed into the darkness.
She regretted now, as she returned to reality, realizing she was too scared to return those words.
She was broken from her thoughts when Nara lifted her gray head to the wind smelling what lie ahead. Her lip curled and she bared her teeth at the darkness.
Three coal black wolves stepped out of the darkness, their yellow eyes gleaming, and fangs bore. The Fallen. The middle one walked forward.
“You don’t belong here half breed! Leave, if you value your life”
Shikara glared defiantly back at them and pulled her blade gracefully from its sheath, to see Daken’s amulet swinging from its hilt gave her courage she’d not known she had.
“Do you have the courage to back up that threat?” she swung the blade in front of her, ready for anything.
The attack came at her fast, sharp teeth ripped through her arm, she tried her hardest to fight them off but the only thing she could see was black blurs of fur. The wolf in her roared to be released, she closed her eyes and surrendered to her will. Without hesitation she swung and caught the chest of a black wolf, it fell to the forest floor and withered away to dust. One wolf latched its jaws onto her shoulder, she screamed in pain, trying to shake it off. Something ripped its fangs from her shoulder and as the leader collided with her, pinning her to the ground. Shikara grabbed it by the ruff and dug her fangs into its thick throat as its fangs snapped by her ear. She ripped a chunk of flesh away and blood flooded on her face. The wolf fell limp on top of her.
Almost collapsing from exhaustion and pain, her blood stained clothes ripped and torn to shreds, her shoulder bleeding freely, she continued deeper into the forest.
Just when she had started to lose hope that the temple was even there, she saw it, half hidden by the thick mess of vines and trees. She ran to it and almost cried out of happiness. Two granite bears guarded its door. She walked inside and kneeled before the idol of a giant silver wolf with large spread wings small onyx raven limp in its jaws.
She was flooded with memories, thinking of the last time she saw Daken. She was walking to the forest edge to meet Daken, only to find the watchers holding him by the arms. He was bloody and only half conscious.
“No…” Shikara mumbled to herself as she ran to him.
“What is the meaning of this!?” she demanding, knowing full well what they had beaten him half to death for. Her.
“He has been eloping with a Wolf” one of the Watchers stated simply, glaring at her. “He knew the rules and it has been made clear since The Beginning that that is…” it paused to glare at Daken, “unforgivable” it said in it’s tongue.
“Please!” Shikara begged, “I’ll take his punishment, just let him go please!”
The Watchers looked grim “no” they said flatly, their gray eyes were cold as the one ripped Daken’s head clean off.
Shikara screamed and fell to her knees as they disappeared. Sorrow and pain tore through her like hot steel. She crawled sobbing over to his body and attempted to heal him, trying desperately to reattach his head.
She cried and laid her head on his bloodied chest. “I’m so sorry, I could have stopped this, I’m so sorry “
She laid there for hours sobbing and choking on her own tears, begging his corpse to come back until the sun rose and she had to return.
She left her memories, Nara nudged her muzzle under her arm and her soft voice soothed her thoughts.
“Having second thoughts?”
With the cold seriousness of that spoke of pain and sorrow she replied, “Never,”
“I was afraid of that, you are gonna die you know”
“Your point?” she replied coldly.
“Do you think that’s fair for him? He gets your immortal life, but has to live it without you.”
She had thought of that, but at least he’d be alive, that’s all that mattered right now.
“Thank you, my friend, for staying by my side through all this, you have been good to me.” Shikara bowed her head to Nara, “But you must leave now.”
Nara bowed back, her golden eyes regretful, “I will miss you friend, may we meet in the next life.” And with that she left the temple.
She took a deep breath, preparing herself for what she was about to do, this was something to be thought through carefully and she was jumping headfirst into it, not caring about the consequences. She put the amulet around her neck and placed her hands on the feet of the idol, releasing all her life and soul into it. She fell and felt the temple shaking, everything about this act was defying all the rules. The Watchers were angry and the whole world vibrated with their rage. If felt as if everything had fallen apart.
It seemed like she was lying on that stone floor for hours, waiting for a miracle, just waiting. Watching the sun slowly rise outside she began to lose all hope. She was feeling weaker and weaker by the second and then she felt nothing at all, her eyes grew dark and cold.
She saw Daken’s large figure kneel down next to her, his face filled with terror as he watched her slowly deteriorate away into ash.
Her voice barely more than a faint whisper in the wind, “I love you”
